The short answer
Blot (never rub), flush from the back with cold water, then treat with one tablespoon of dish soap plus one tablespoon of white vinegar in two cups of cold water. Repeat before drying — heat sets the stain permanently.
Coffee is a tannin stain. Cold water and acid lift it; hot water and detergent bake it in.
Step by step
- Blot with a dry cloth immediately — press, do not rub.
- Flush the fabric from the reverse side with cold running water.
- Mix 1 tbsp dish soap + 1 tbsp white vinegar into 2 cups cold water.
- Sponge the solution on, working from the outside of the stain inward.
- Blot dry, repeat until no colour transfers to the cloth.
- Only then wash normally and air dry. Check before it goes near a dryer.

Common questions
What about coffee with milk?
Add an enzyme detergent step — milk is a protein stain and needs different chemistry.
Carpet?
Same solution, but blot with a dry towel and weight it down for an hour to wick moisture up.
Dried stain?
Soak in cold water with oxygen bleach for 2–4 hours first, then treat as above.
