Pro Tip: Add 5–10% extra for uneven ground or compaction if this is for a driveway or patio base.

How it works

  1. Multiply length × width (feet) to get the area, then multiply by depth in feet (inches ÷ 12) for cubic feet.
  2. Divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards — the unit most suppliers sell by.
  3. Multiply by the stone's density (about 1.4 tons per cubic yard for crushed stone) to get tons.

Example: A 30 × 10 ft driveway at 3 inches deep is 75 cubic feet = 2.8 cubic yards ≈ 3.9 tons of crushed stone.
