How it works
- Pavers = patio area ÷ one paver's area, plus 5–10% for cuts.
- Base gravel: 4 inches compacted for patios (6 for driveways).
- Bedding sand: 1 inch under the pavers.
Example: A 12 × 12 ft patio with 6 × 9 in pavers and 10% waste needs 423 pavers, 1.78 yd³ of base gravel and 0.44 yd³ of sand.

How thick should the paver base be?
4 inches of compacted gravel for patios and walkways, 6–8 inches for driveways.
Can I lay pavers directly on sand?
Not for anything lasting — without a gravel base they sink and shift.
