The short answer
Follow 3-2-1: three copies, two different media, one off-site. Cloud backup on automatic, plus a periodic full copy to a computer or external drive. Verify by restoring one file — an untested backup is not a backup.
Most people have one copy and call it a backup. Phones are lost, stolen and dropped in water constantly.
Step by step
- Turn on the built-in cloud backup (iCloud or Google One) and confirm it is actually completing.
- Check what is excluded — messages, app data and some photo libraries often are.
- Add a second copy: full device backup to a computer, or photos to an external drive.
- Store one copy off-site or in a separate cloud account.
- Test the backup by restoring a single photo or file.
- Set a quarterly calendar reminder to run the manual copy and re-test.
- Note where two-factor recovery codes live — a restored phone with no 2FA access is still a lockout.
What it costs
| Item | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Cloud storage 200GB | $3–$4 / month |
| External SSD 1TB | $60–$110 |
| Data recovery after failure (And often unsuccessful) | $300–$1,500 |
Common questions
Is cloud sync a backup?
No. Sync propagates deletions. A backup keeps versions.
How much space do I need?
Check current usage and double it. Photo libraries grow faster than people expect.
What about WhatsApp?
It backs up separately. Enable its own cloud backup explicitly.
