The short answer
Check disk free space first (keep 15% free), disable startup apps, then check whether the drive is a hard disk — swapping an HDD for an SSD is the single largest speed improvement and costs $40–$90.
Most "slow laptop" fixes online are cosmetic. Work through the four real causes in order.
Step by step
- Check free disk space. Under 15% free will slow any machine badly.
- Open Task Manager or Activity Monitor and sort by CPU, then by memory, and identify the actual offender.
- Disable startup apps you did not deliberately install.
- Check whether the drive is an SSD or HDD. If HDD, that is your bottleneck.
- Check RAM usage during normal work. Constant 90%+ means you need more.
- Clean the fan vents — thermal throttling looks exactly like a slow CPU.
- Reinstall the OS as a last resort; it fixes years of accumulated cruft.
What it costs
| Item | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| SATA SSD 1TB | $45–$90 |
| RAM upgrade 16GB | $35–$70 |
| Compressed air / cleaning | $8–$15 |
| Shop install labour | $50–$120 |
Common questions
Do cleaner apps help?
Almost never. Several make things worse. Skip them.
How old is too old?
A pre-2015 laptop with an HDD is usually worth upgrading once, then replacing.
Browser tabs?
Real cause of memory pressure. Each heavy tab can be 300–600MB.
